Adonis: In Greek mythology, a beautiful young man who was loved by Venus. Aesculaps: Aesculapius was the Greek god of medicine, a great healer who possessed the skill to restore the dead to life.
Aa: The navigable river on which Mitau is situated. Altan: A type of balcony built onto the upper story of a house. Ambra: An excretion of the sperm whale, used to make perfume.
Abt: Thomas Abbt, 1738-1766, a German philosopher and author, was G.E. Lessing's successor as editor of the Briefe, die neueste Literatur betreffend. His treatise Vom Verdienste was written in 1765.
*Lavater: Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741-1801), was a Swiss thinker and theological author. A close friend of J. G. Herder and J. W. Goethe, with ties to J. G. Hamann, Lavater wrote religious poetry and theological works.
