Friederike was born in Dresden, the only child of Johann Wilhelm Sparmann.  She fled from home as a young woman to avoid an arranged marriage and joined the theater in 1754.   That same year, she married Johann Gottlieb Hensel but they divorced in 1759.  In 1772, she married Abel Seyler, a Swiss-born theater director.  She had a step-son, Ludwig Erdwin Seyler and a step-daughter, Sophie Marie Katharina Seyler, from her marriage to Abel.
