Q:  How are student researchers involved in the Sophie Project?

A: Student researchers comprise the core of the academic-oriented Sophie Project. All student researchers gain valuable experience through archival research, processing works, and interaction with the scholarly community. Students are also mentored by professors and other scholars as they learn skills ranging from discovering and retrieving forgotten texts to transcribing, proofing, and digitizing works of literature, music, and journalism.

For more information about the involvement of student researchers in the Sophie Project, see the introduction and multimedia tour located on the Sophie website.

Q:  Can anyone participate in the Sophie Project?

A: Yes.  We encourage everyone to be involved in the Sophie Project.

As colleagues of the Sophie Project, we have limited time and funds. We often find exciting potential projects and simply do not have the means to complete all of them.  We therefore invite scholars and friends to participate in these projects, thus helping the Sophie Project fulfill its role as a facilitator of good academic scholarship surrounding works by women. Some of our most exciting projects have been suggested by our students and colleagues. We look forward to working with you!

We also invite you — whatever your student status or professional affiliation —   to submit your articles, theses, Power-Point presentations and other projects to the peer-reviewed Sophie Journal.

Q:  Are all materials on the website available for public use?

A: Yes. All materials found on the Sophie website are free to use for personal and educational purposes. However, reproduction of any kind solely for commercial reasons is not authorized and may be a violation of copyright law.

Q:  Are any texts available besides the ones listed on the website?

A: Yes. The Sophie Project is continually working on texts, many of which have not yet begun to be digitized. Please direct any inquiries regarding texts to the Sophie Project Director or Assistant Director using the contact form.

Q:  How often is the Sophie website updated?

A: The Sophie website is updated on a daily basis. Usually texts in the process of being digitized, edited, and glossed are listed under the "In Progress" section.  Once a text is completed, it is immediately placed on the website and added to the growing collection.

Q:  How can I submit a text to the Sophie Journal for review?

A: Submissions are welcomed from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as all other interested scholars.

Submissions may be made in English or German, but German articles must be written at a native language level. The editors are interested in articles which present fresh perspectives on and insights into the art, literature, lives and experience of early German-speaking women, up through the year 1939.

A hard copy (no E-mail attachments, please) of manuscripts for review should be sent both to the Editor and to the Associate editor using the addresses found on the contact form. Manuscripts are to be prepared for anonymous review, with information identifying the author available only on the cover letter, not on the manuscript itself, and should follow the Sixth Edition of the MLA Handbook. Accepted articles must be available in disk form. The disk should be labeled with the name of the author, the title of the article, and the computer program used. Disks should be IBM compatible.

Q:  Which browsers and screen resolutions does the website support?

A: The Sophie webteam has made every effort to ensure correct page display in a variety of web browsers and for users with disabilities. If you encounter difficulties when viewing the website, make sure that your browser settings allow pictures to be displayed and has javascript enabled.

The website is optimized for screen resolutions of 800 X 600 or greater. Refer to your computer's help files for instructions how to identify or change your screen resolution.

Q:  Why can't I view texts that are PDF files?

A: There are several possible reasons. First, make sure that a current version of the free Adobe Reader program is installed on your computer. Second, many of the PDF files on the Sophie website are very large and may require significant time to download, depending on your internet connection speed.

Q:  Why won't the contact form allow me to attach and send my file?

A: Some files might be rejected due to virus concerns. If possible, scan your file with current antivirus software and try sending it again - usually this will solve the problem. If the submission form still doesn't allow you to send your attachment, and you know the file is virus free, simply email it to michelle_stott@byu.edu.

Q:  Whom should I contact about an error on the Sophie website?

A: The Sophie webteam should be contacted if you encounter any errors or have any questions regarding the website. Simply fill out the contact form and choose "Website Support" from the recipient field.
